Our story

Foothills Academy was the realization of a dream for former Judge Jeff Choate. While working for the state of Kentucky, Mr. Choate realized the need for a place to help the many troubled youth he saw while presiding as a judge. After hard work and dedication to his vision for nearly 10 years, Mr. Choate’s dream was finally realized when Foothills Academy opened its doors in April of 2002. Today, Foothills Academy is located on 80+ acres of land in Albany, KY. It’s picturesque setting of rolling hills and beautiful tree-lined landscape is a perfect place for its residents to lay the foundations for a new life. The thriving campus is a treatment center licensed for 72 residents who are served by 100 employees.

At the facility, young males (ages 13-18) receive many therapeutic services. Residents receive individual, group, and family counseling. They are active in drug and alcohol counseling along with anger and behavior management. Foothills Academy has two programs: our  Residential Program and Substance Abuse Program. Foothills Academy’s approach to treatment is a team concept. It is their belief that everyone – from counselors to line staff, and maintenance personnel – are responsible for helping these young men turn their lives around. Foothills also believes in instilling a sense of pride in their residents. This is achieved by teaching their residents independent living skills. Each resident is responsible for doing their own laundry, cleaning their house and rooms, and maintaining the beauty of the campus.

Foothills Academy engages in many community work projects. The residents have picked up trash on littered highways, cleaned up old cemeteries, and routinely completed many other community projects. In addition, there are numerous recreational opportunities that are provided to residents for enrichment and the development of social skills. Basketball and volleyball are regular activities in the full size gymnasium on campus. Softball, outdoor volleyball, camping, fishing and lake activities are provided during the summer months.
